Ultimately, the husky's perseverance is rewarded. Under the light of a high moon, he catches a "familiar scent". Following this trail through the darkness and ice, he eventually reaches the edge of the woods where he is finally reunited with his "old pack". The book concludes as a celebration of family, intelligence, and the unwavering determination to return to where one belongs.
