In 1853 a young man from England, having joined up with the Stewart-Love wagon train, walked from St. Joseph, Missouri to Portland, Oregon. Once there, he set about supporting himself in the only trade he knew—printing. During a career which spanned well over sixty years, he published the first successful daily newspaper in the Pacific Northwest, initiated the Northwest pulp and paper industry, served in the State government, developed real estate within the city and railroad lines without. He also created first the town of Camas, Washington, and then a full-service bank in downtown Portland. Along the way, he founded the Mazamas, the Portland Rose Festival Association, and Portland’s Royal Rosarians. Then he built the Pittock Mansion. This is his story—an account of the man who arrived barefoot and penniless in Portland, dying over sixty-five years later, leaving an estate of some eight million dollars: Henry Lewis Pittock.
