One of the most popular organic soil additives, blood meal has been trusted by farmers for generations. Before synthetic fertilizers became commercially available, it was more common to add nutrients with natural products such as manure, bone, and blood. Heat treating blood reclaimed from livestock and then drying it out produces blood meal, a Nitrogen-rich powder ideal for organic gardening. And because it makes use of what would otherwise be a waste product, blood meal is a vital part of sustainable agriculture.

Adding blood meal to your soil feeds micro-organisms that convert its nutrients into a form of Nitrogen that plants can take in through their roots. Plants use Nitrogen to produce chlorophyll. In addition to giving plants their rich, green color, chlorophyll allows plants to convert sunlight into energy through photosynthesis. Plants without enough Nitrogen turn ugly, yellow, and sad, a state called “chlorosis.” But it’s not just about looks. Nitrogen deficiency means plants lack the energy needed to grow and produce flowers and fruit. Certain plants – tomatoes, squash, peppers, and dark leafy greens – use Nitrogen more heavily than others. So, make sure your soil has plenty to give them.
