She laced her fingers together and stretched her arms out in front of her as she slowly bowed her head and curved her spine. She could feel the tingling sensation in her back muscles, more like stinging really. It hurt, but it felt good. Slowly, she began to roll her head around, to loosen up her neck. As she moved her head, she looked at the iridescent blue snakes she had tattooed on both of her arms. She smiled as she moved her arms back and forth while admiring the art of the tattoos. Tattoos were art she could always take with her. She would never be without art. These tattoos were incredible. The blue iridescent snakes on her arms looked real as they coiled there way from Hope's thumbs, around her wrists, and continued up her arms, until they reached her elbows. They were her pets. The snake tattoos had ancient Celtic symbols covering their shinny blue skin. Hope came up with the idea for the blue snake tattoos after reading about them in The Mists of Avalon. The Mists of Avalon is the magical saga of the women behind King Arthur's throne. In the story, Avalon was an enchanted land where women rule as the creators of life and keepers of knowledge. Morgaine is the darkly bewitching half sister to Arthur and a high priestess in Avalon. The priestesses of Avalon possessed magic, and they were absolutely Pagan. Morgaine's quest was to wrest Britain away from Christianity, the new religion, which viewed women as the carriers of original sin, and to return it to the worship of the Mother Goddess. The story tells of the people of Avalon, who where the people of the forest. They were the people who believed in the Faye, the tree spirits, and dragons, among other things. They were the people who believed in the ways of old, and were not fooled by Christianity. These people never forgot the old ways. They remained Pagan, even when the world was being converted to Christianity. So these Pagans of Avalon required that any King who ruled over them would wear the tattoos of the blue snakes, which were Pagan symbols of power. The snakes were related to their beloved Mother Goddess, and it was her who required that the King wear the symbols of the Goddess and her beloved dragons. Hope loved The Mists of Avalon. It was her all time, absolute most favorite story! When she read the part about the snakes, she saw the image of the sakes on her own arms. She knew she was going to get them tattooed on her. In her mind's eye, she added an Om sign to the snake on her left hand and an Ankh to the snake on her right. She wanted the snakes to represent God and Eternal life. She found a progressive tattoo artist who was using a more natural Ink, and had him make her King! She paid more, of course, for the special ink. Hope loved these tattoos! She felt the power they represented. These were the symbols of her Ancestors. This was her connection to all of the Pagans who had lived and died before her, all those who gave their lives as they fought for their freedom from oppression and tyranny. As she admired the iridescent blue snakes wrapped around her arms, she smiled at herself for being crazy enough to put them on her body. Hope was fortunate to have been lead to an incredible tattoo artist. She knew how important it was to hire the absolute best when getting a tattoo. Hope absolutely adored tasteful tattoos, and she was intrigued by the history and origin of tattooing. Hope studied the history of tattooing, just as she studied anything that interested her. Through her studies Hope discovered that throughout history, tattooing, like other forms of body decoration,
