In the latter half of the nineteenth century, their numbers dwindling and their future uncertain, they did all they could to hold on to a way of life, a homeland, a purpose for living. Ohiyesa (“The Winner”) was destined to participate in that final struggle. His father’s decision steered him toward another path—away from his tradition. He returned to his people a physician and a powerful voice for the Native American cause. In Indian Heroes and Great Chieftains , he honors the deeds of great men he admires. He speaks to the world, but he speaks as a Sioux. Some of the stories—such as those of Sitting Bull, Red Cloud, Rain-in-the-Face, and Two-Strike—the author has heard in direct conversations with the great men. Others are stories of warriors and chiefs who have been killed treacherously or in battle. Their faults as well as their noble deeds are revealed. In the voice of Dr. Charles A.
