During the period of the Second Seminole War, Ann Perrine and her family make Indian Key their temporary home, patiently awaiting the war’s end so they can relocate to mainland Florida. Only twelve acres in size and surrounded by water, Ann is anxious upon their arrival, but soon discovers a new and liberating way of life. She finds added joy and purpose in the forbidden act of mentoring a young slave girl. However, things can be good for only so long with the manipulative and disreputable Captain John Jacob Housman running the island and the Perrine family’s tranquil existence could soon be at peril. Fast forward to 2015. Lauren Hanson is ready for a change, both personally and professionally, and an exciting job in the Florida Keys will provide the much needed opportunity. Just prior to moving out of her ancestral Charleston home, a fateful discovery is made, tying her in further to the life awaiting her in the islands. Once settled into her new home and career, she turns her attention to nearby Indian Key, the subject matter of the recent discovery. With the help of a perplexing charter boat captain, Lauren delves into the tiny island’s storied history. The partnership leads not only to the divulgence of a long held island secret, but to another more devastating secret, one that could be too much for Lauren to bear. Discover the rich history of the Florida Keys in this page-turning novella and the same way two women, centuries apart, have to fight adversity and for their future happiness. While putting the finishing touches on my first novella, Vindication Key, I stumbled across an online article about a small twelve acre island called Indian Key, located on the Atlantic side of Islamorada. I was amazed at what history recorded as having happened there in the early 1800's. It was then that I knew I had the subject matter for my next book. I dug deep into the recesses of the internet, discovering a plethora of valuable resources: personal correspondence, congressional records, and magazine and newspaper articles from the period, all corroborating many of the events that occurred. Of great value were real interviews given, late in life, by those that lived on the island and actually experienced much of what you're about to read. Of course, as so many authors do, I added some fictional subplots to the nineteenth century timeline (Indian Key is a dual timeline book). I'll leave it up to the reader to decide what really happened or didn't happen in that timeline. However, my author's note at the end will reveal some answers. I think you might be surprised by a few of them. I'm proud to bring the engrossing story of little Indian Key to life again! Robin has had a special place in her heart for the Florida Keys since first visiting there with her husband Rick in 1992 and they've been making annual trips ever since. The enticing, lesser known history of the some of the smaller islands compelled her to do further research and write three novellas, Vindication Key, Indian Key, and Flashback Key, all centered around the fascinating history of the island chain. In 2014, Robin and her husband finally realized their dream and purchased their own vacation home in the Lower Keys. Their permanent residence is on Lake Keowee, just outside of Clemson, South Carolina.
