A 1982 Dubuque Fighting Saints Marketing Flyer read as follows:"In May of 1980 a small group of hockey enthusiasts formed a corporation called Mississippi Valley Hockey Inc. They didn't know the team they would feature at the Five Flags Center in Dubuque, Iowa would turn into one of the most successful hockey stories in the country."…This book is NOT that story! You may have heard how the 1980-81 Dubuque Fighting Saints won 50 games in its first year, a league record. Or how they set attendance records many teams would envy today. Or how they won the scoring title, the goaltending title, the southern division title, the league title, the playoffs and the national championship. The coach, the community, the leaders, the volunteers, and the fans helped make their on-ice accomplishments a momentous success. This is all true but it is only part of the story.The truly compelling stories come from inside the locker room, the bus rides, the bars, the houses, and in the community. Off the ice is where these players, the coach, and the people of Dubuque were unique. These are their true stories worth telling. These aren't the "glory days" stories old people tell because they have nothing to talk about, or the fishing tales that grow larger every year. These are true stories of ineptitude and failure, gross negligence and sheer luck, personality disorders and strange encounters.
