When we first envisioned creating our next book, we researched what interior design inspirations people are most seeking. Kitchen and bathroom design topped the list. Studies show that the most important rooms that affect the sale of a home are the kitchen and primary bath. And that statistic was the same whether people were buying a new-build or a previously owned home. Poor design in these two rooms led most to look elsewhere. These two rooms lead the remodeling and rennovation of existing homes by a large margin. So as we embarked on our journey to assemble this book, we began talking to some of the most creative designers on the planet. Many of these people we have worked with on our other books over the years. What we found is not only how important kitchen and bath design is in their individual portfolios, but there is a whole thriving industry subset of designers who solely focus on kitchens and or baths. There are member organizations that provide research, education, and networking, led by the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA), that help fuel industry growth and consumer awareness. Combined, the kitchen and bath industry pumps $180 - $200 billion dollars into the U.S. economy. Like all design topics, kitchen and bath design experiences many trends. New technologies, improved materials, design styles, and color schemes are the trend leaders. In this book, you will witness some. But we also found that kitchens and baths are less “trendy” than other rooms, as they are largely built into the home and not easily changed or removed if trends change. In speaking with designers across the country, we found an overwhelming mantra to install classic, time-tested, and more neutral materials, such as marble, quartz or other natural stones, and wellcrafted cabinetry that can be the base of any future trends. Then utilize paint and accessories (things easily changed) to showcase the current trends. Bathtubs are another example, as freestanding tubs are utilzed in most primary baths, and have become an accessory rather than a built-in.
