Humanity has received the devastating news that a world-ending asteroid, Sarah, is on a direct collision path with Earth, arriving less than three weeks after the global announcement. During government-mandated, nightly preparedness drills, the Billings family accidentally discovers a small, supernatural opening in their concrete basement wall. Ben Billings, the patriarch of the family, conducts multiple experiments, passing objects through the one-way opening and even establishing communication with someone on the other side, with help from his blind daughter, who has developed supernatural sight, giving her the ability to see outlines of things on the other side. As news of the Billings’ basement spreads, government and military officials quarantine the property, seeing “the hole” as a possible escape from their doomed planet. With Sarah’s approach nearing, and a variety of new problems and obstacles related to “the hole,” Ben and his family must do their best to accommodate the military presence, while considering if they should risk going through to an unknown place or face unavoidable extinction.
