Jerry's Riot: The True Story of Montana's 1959 Prison Disturbance , is both a prison memoir and a true crime tale . The nonfiction book examines the explosion that resulted when the prison's new reform warden collided with lifelong convict Jerry Myles, who wanted to run the prison. "The sheer depth of Giles' research is impressive. The way the story is structured is also glue on the reader's hands. There is a slow, detailed, agonizing buildup ... what really held me fast to the book was the enormous quality of the prose . True crime reviewer Laura James "I'm an avid reader and found Jerry's Riot one of the most enjoyable books that I've ever read . The extent of research by Mr. Giles makes all the many characters in the book come to life in a riveting page turner ." Patrick from California "I admire your writing style for sure. True, gutsy, graphic and tough just like the inmates." Joy from Virginia "I'm really impressed with both your research and your analysis, not to mention a well-written and riveting narrative . Your book is an important work for understanding the living history of corrections and prison reform. It is also a gripping story of one prison and the tragic event which occurred there. I'm glad to have the book and will read it again." Myrna from Arkansas "I was able to visualize the events and settings with clarity ... Author Kevin Giles' ability to describe the environment and place the players in that environment with seamless writing is commendable." Malcolm from Texas Why buy this book? Because it's a good human story. Soon after I began researching this book, I began to understand that a prison riot is more than a confrontation between vanquished lawbreakers and their keepers. It's a struggle by real men on both side of the bars over dignity. Some seek to find it, others to preserve it. In Deer Lodge, Montana, in 1959, a psychopath and a reform warden both wanted to be somebody, and they were soon to collide. This book tells about the hundreds of men who paid the price. An excerpt: Jerry Myles commanded Officer Cozzens to open the door leading down into the dining hall. Cozzens fumbled with the lock, nervously watching the array of weapons around him. Myles grabbed the keys, turning the lock with a clunk that seemed to echo in the cell house. He warned Officer Baldwin and Cozzens not to make trouble or they might be attacked. He prodded them across the dining hall and all the way up the stairs into Cell House 1. Many of the prisoners standing around them held meat cleavers and butcher knives pilfered from the kitchen. Some clutched hammers, others wielded clubs of wood and iron. The new captives wondered in bewilderment where they had found all those weapons. Minutes after Stanford's capture, Victor Baldwin and Larry Cozzens descended into the Hole. At least a dozen nervous faces, barely illuminated under the dim bulb, stared back. A low voice came from somewhere in the shadows. "What the hell?" it said Despite what he preached about rioting over conditions, Jerry Myles didn't believe his own words. He couldn't train his thinking on a single plan because his anger toward Warden Floyd Powell and his deputy, Ted Rothe, tore at him with sharp monster claws. He knew only that he wanted trouble. They would remember Jerry Myles for what would happen on this day. He was certain of that. Kevin S. Giles was raised in Deer Lodge in the shadow of Montana State Prison . His father, Murry, narrowly escaped being taken hostage during the 1959 riot and later became a lieutenant of custody. Kevin is a University of Montana journalism graduate and has worked as a reporter, editor and marketer for six daily newspapers. He spent 10 years writing and researching Jerry's Riot . He also has authored a novel, Summer of the Black Chevy , and two biographies about the first woman elected to Congress, Jeannette Rankin. One Woman Against War: The Jeannette Rankin Story , is the new and expanded version. The earlier book, Flight of the Dove , is out of print. Used Book in Good Condition
