John Brookes is one of the world's most respected master gardeners; his more than 1,200 designs have forced a major rethinking of what gardens can be. This first-ever illustrated retrospective of Brookes's career is fascinating reading both for its rich insight into his life, and for opening a wondrous new window onto the garden designs he created for private clients, many of which have never been publicly viewed. More than 50 of the best examples of his work are on display, highlighted by 170 color photographs. Also featured are his explorations in adding movement and dimension to garden design, thoughts on the special considerations for garden entrances, and his understanding of the cultural context of the "room outside." Dr Barbara Simms is a garden and landscape historian with a particular interest in gardens of the post-war era. Barbara is a lecturer in garden history at Birkbeck College (London University), Cambridge University Institute of Continuing Education and the Inchbald School of Garden Design. In addition to her teaching commitments, Barbara continues to be involved in research, writing and speaking on garden history and is involved with the London Parks & Gardens Trust (chairman 2001-2007), the Museum of Garden History (trustee) and the Garden History Society (editor of the Society's journal, Garden History). She has written articles for a wide range of leading gardening magazines, such as London Gardener, Garden Design Journal and London Landscapes. Used Book in Good Condition
