Joone likes the color orange, ice-cream sandwiches, and playing outside. She lives in a yurt with her grandfather and her pet turtle, Dr. Chin, who rides around on her hat. Grandpa teaches Joone something new every day. Sometimes Joone teaches him something new, too, like how to make a daisy chain. Together they enjoy life’s small joys—sunsets, tree houses, and most of all, each other. Emily Kate Moon’s debut picture book is a charming tribute to the outdoors and a tender portrait of a grandfather and granddaughter’s loving relationship. Fans of Ladybug Girl, Freckleface Strawberry, and even Dora the Explorer will fall in love with this independent, free-spirited little girl. PreS-Gr 1-A sweet, gentle narrative about a child who is being raised by her grandfather. The text, which celebrates the small things in life that a child might appreciate, reads smoothly and is written with some flair; but with very little plot, it lacks a real hook for a young audience. Joone's solo swim does add some humor and adventure, but it may be hard to explain, within a realistic story, that Grandpa is absent in this scene. The bucolic setting, Joone's home (a yurt on the banks of a small body of water with a tree house in the backyard), and the mood (quiet and loving) are more central to the book than the action. Moon shows promise, not only as a picture-book writer, but as an illustrator as well. The gouache and pencil illustrations are bright, colorful, and full of interesting detail. Rather than a book to read to groups, Joone is best suited for sharing one-on-one.-Maralita L. Freeny, District of Columbia Public Libraryα(c) Copyright 2013. "Joone could be a contemporary, country-dwelling cousin to Eloise: another precocious, articulate and turtle-loving child with charm to spare." - Kirkus Reviews "A sweet, gentle narrative about a child who is being raised by her grandfather….Moon shows promise, not only as a picture-book writer, but as an illustrator as well." - School Library Journal "Moon’s ability to convey her heroine’s self-assured contentment and love for her grandfather without resorting to the twee or overly literal is the mark of a real, if nascent talent." - Publishers Weekly Emily Kate Moon has always wanted to live in a tree house and write and illustrate children’s books. Joone is her first book, but she has yet to live in a tree house. Instead, she lives in Austin, Texas, with her husband, two sons, and their dog, Benny. Used Book in Good Condition

How are ratings calculated?
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness.
