Three little Pippins live under a big tree in the forest. They are preparing to travel from their home in the woods, across lakes and a sea, and across mountains to arrive at the Neverending Sea. They encounter some danger, adventure, and animal friends along the way, before returning safely home. The story is accompanied by lush illustrations (based on the US Pacific Northwest for this tale). I love the outdoors: forests, streams, deserts, mountains, coasts, plains, beaches and all the flora and fauna, geology, seasons and weather events that come with wherever I happen to be. Having been in Nature a lot, there always seemed to me evidence of tiny creatures here and there as I traveled - an overturned toadstool, pebbles arranged in a circle, tiny scuff marks in the soil, diminutive dinnerware such as acorn caps set out on little tables, well-worn pathways under vegetation. It made me imagine an idealized world of little people enjoying our beautiful, amazing, mysterious planet, living in harmony with each other and whichever environment they inhabited anywhere on Earth - even though there is some danger. Several years ago, I set out to describe the world of the teeny imaginary creatures that I call Pippins - named after the delicious apples I used to eat as a child in Virginia. Being both an artist and a writer, I began dreaming of how the Pippins might live. Journey to the Neverending Sea is the first Pippins book that shows them gently living in a watery, forested land modeled after the Pacific Northwest where I lived for many years. Most of my drawings are made using colored pencil and each one takes quite a long time to do. I love the portability and the ability to blend infinite colors. My drawings definitely show "handmade" qualities and - fortuitously - the publisher of Journey to the Neverending Sea, Brolly Books, celebrates hand-drawn art! Brolly publishes one of my favorite children's book author/illustrators - Shirley Barber - whose tales of Martha B. Rabbit partly inspired me to create kids' books, too. Robin Rogers has been an outdoorswoman and environmentalist her entire life, as well as an artist, graphic designer, writer, architect, and independent bookseller. She studied fine arts and holds a Master of Architecture degree. She has traveled extensively and always imagined a secret, tiny world, especially in the world's beautiful national parks and other natural areas. She is also a mother and grandmother who takes great joy in books and sharing them with her family.
