In March of 1941, the war in Europe rages, and the story of a German girl and her family continues. Now a young woman, Kätchen has been sent by her family to the safety of America prior to the outbreak of war. When mail service to Germany is cut off, she loses contact with them and any means of helping them. Rolf, who she hopes to marry and whose bomber was shot down over England, is a German Prisoner Of War being transported to a prison camp in Canada. Kätchen's family in Hamburg, Germany must live under harsh Nazi rule and worsening conditions. After the horrendous bombing of Hamburg in July 1943, they escape to live with an aunt in a small town in central Germany. Theirs is a story of the miserable conditions in Germany during and after the war. Kätchen and her family were not part of Hitler’s rise to power and takeover of Germany, but they like many others would suffer the pain and consequences of Hitler’s rule.
