In this 1917 book (a revision of an earlier version in 1899), Charles Mutzenberg attempted historical accounts of several infamous Kentucky feud. He has chapters about the Hatfield McCoy Feud, The Tolliver-Martin-Logan Vendetta, The French-Eversole War, and the feuding in "Bloody Breathitt." Mutzenberg, who worked as a clerk for Governor Simon Buckner in the years during which many of these feuds took place, writes with only a loose connection to historical facts and the ultimate purpose of these narratives seems to be to paint the inhabitants of eastern Kentucky as uncivilized and prone to irrational violence. According to this line of thinking, the state of Kentucky and Governor Buckner had no alternative but to use the power of the state to bring those areas into submission, which, at the same time, opened up those regions to exploitation. This books serves as an interesting look at how the political and economic elite in the late 1800s used feud-related violence to justify expropriating hundreds of thousands of acres of timber and coal-rich lands from the local landowners.
