Tony Kushner s Homebody/Kabul was just beginning rehearsal when Islamist terrorists attacked the United States on 9/11. A play about a British woman who butts up against Afghan culture, Homebody/Kabul perfectly takes up one of Kushner s main theatrical themes: the unraveling of history. At the time in 2001, Kushner said, I didn t imagine, when I was working on the play, that by the time we produced it, the United States would be at war with Afghanistan and yet, his prescient play foreshadows the problems, both human and political, that arise when two foreign cultures collide.
