A haunted house, a buried UFO, and a love story that should’ve stayed six feet under. An engaged couple just wanted a fresh start. What they got was a horney ghost that chased them straight into the depths of an ancient spaceship. And that’s where the real fun begins. Inside the buried saucer, nothing stays dead for long. Mutants, aliens, and forbidden science collide in a grotesque carnival of chaos, where every door hides a new mistake of evolution and every shadow carries something hungry. Love may conquer all, but in here... it fights death. This isn’t romance. This isn’t a rescue. And it damn sure ain’t Disneyland. Do not trust the dead... they cheat. The Prairies Book Review of: LAB SPILL: A Dark Comedy. Maybe. An action-packed, epic-in-scope adventure. Ripe for big screen adaptation or a web series. Rife's latest in The Cool Thing series is a roller-coaster ride of vicious battles, unexpected chases, last minute life-and-death situations, and love. The creature infested lower levels of an ancient, buried starship, is a dumping ground for the ship's splicing and breeding failures, both living and dead . The ensemble of mutated creatures is appropriately creepy and proves fascinating in its own right. Rife also rounds out his narrative with heartwarmingly tender details, particularly Proby and Shadow's haunting love story, and the dog and cat are as cute as they come. The colorful characters are well-developed, particularly the mutant Proby, who manages to hit a larger-than-life note. Rife skillfully handles his cast, and is effortless when it comes to integrating a massive back story into the main plot. The brilliance of the novel, though, is in the way he develops the main storyline with intimate character stories, like those of the mismatched RL and Jayderay. Accidentally finding a way into the ship, Jayderay is taken by a hellish creature. RL teams with Frankie, his business partner, in a frantic rescue attempt. Jayderay's undying love for seemingly undeserving RL, and Frankie's loyalty make them very human. There is a lot of intriguing otherworldly content in these pages, and readers will be turning them nonstop. Midwest Book Review Lab Spill: A Dark Comedy. Maybe. is part of The Cool Thing series and represents an uncommon and attractive blend of sci-fi and humor rarely seen in the genre. Lab Spill is not exactly a sci-fi read; it's unique, thought-provoking, unpredictable, and embraces mystery, horror, science, and psychology alike as it romps through a world of monsters, accidents, and unexpected romance. Rife is a master at developing a special brand of tension, and readers will appreciate the story's fast pace, powerful atmospheric descriptions, and its wry sense of irony that permeates the story's satisfying twists and turns. Lab Spill, carries readers and characters into milieus that test their definitions of monsters, love, and humor: "Being in love and proposing doesn't mean the afflicted has had a lobotomy. Just almost." Diane Donovan, Senior Reviewer Judge, 10th Annual Writer's Digest E-Book Awards LAB SPILL is often hilarious and terrifying . Exemplary in its voice and writing style, it will be a love-it-or-hate-it proposition for many readers, but it is consistently entertaining and unique.
