Bhairava originally means “fearsome or fearful”. He is also known as the destroyer of fear or the one who is beyond fear. One interpretation is that he protects his followers from terrible enemies, greed, lust, fear and anger. These enemies are dangerous because they never allow people to seek God/Almighty within themselves. There is also another interpretation: Bha means creation, Ra means preservation and Va means destruction.Bhairava is therefore the one who creates, sustains and dissolves the three phases of life. Then he becomes the last or highest. One of the ancient temples of Kala Bhairava is located in the city of Dhuri (Sangur district) in Punjab. The Kala Bhairava idol in the temple was discovered hundreds of years ago.Kala Bhairava is said to live here. Kashmiris (Gorat) are known to worship Bhairava during Shivratri. The famous Hindu reformer Adi Sankara composed a hymn on Kala Bhairava titled “Sri Kalabhairava Ashtakam” in the city of Kashi (India). Kala Bhairava is the Guru (teacher/mentor) for Sani Bagwan. Kala Bhairava Jeyanti is celebrated across the world for Lord Bhairava. These Ashta Bhairava’s (8 Bhairavas) got married to Ashta Matrikas. These Ashta Bhairava’s and Ashta Matrika’s have dreadful/frightful forms. So, from these Ashta Bhairava’s and Ashta Matrika’s, 64 Bhairava’s and 64 Yogini’s were created as per the vedic textures.
