Fallen leaves are locally available, abundant, and continuously renewed by plants - the perfect sustainable ingredient for pottery glazes. Perfect for those new to ash glazing, and experienced Potters who want to learn about creating more sustainable pottery glazes. In this book you will learn, - How leaf ash glazing works and why it’s great for Potters. - How to identify, collect, dry, and burn leaves into ash. - How to make a leaf ash pottery glaze in 4 easy steps. - How to fire a leaf ash glaze to stoneware temperatures. - 36 leaf ash glaze tests, made with one simple recipe. Leaves, just like any other part of a plant, can be burned to create ash. This ash can be used as an ingredient in pottery glazes. In fact, it is thought that Potters have been using plant ashes in pottery glazes for at least 3500 years! I'm Katherine Tomlinson, and I started an eco-conscious pottery company called Oxford Clay. Over the years, I've explored ways to make my pottery more eco-friendly, including recycling waste wood ash into my pottery glazes. I noticed that recycled wood ash produced different-looking glazes each time, depending on which tree the ash came from. This got me intrigued, and I spent years experimenting with different plant ashes to create unique colours and textures in my pottery glazes. I discovered that it was often the leaves of plants, rather than the wood or stems, which created the most beautiful pottery glazes. The more I experimented, the more I realised the amazing potential of using fallen leaves, shed naturally by plants, in pottery glazes. Unlike many other materials used to make pottery, the ash created by fallen leaves is sustainable and renewable. Leaves are continuously created by plants, are abundant, and can be locally sourced. Using leaf ash in pottery glazing reduces the dependence on mined pottery materials extracted from the Earth and transported internationally. In this book, you’ll learn the simple step-by-step process to make your own beautiful stoneware pottery glazes from leaf ash. From identifying and collecting leaves and processing them into ash, to creating unique high-fire leaf ash glazes – it's achievable even if you've never made a pottery glaze before. You’ll also be able to see 36 leaf ash glazing experiments using fallen leaves I’ve collected. From the light purple colour of Red Oak leaf ash glaze and delicate brown of Indian Bean Tree leaf ash glaze, to the white-blue tones of Rose leaf ash glaze. You can see the many beautiful pottery glazes created by leaves. I have loved collecting fallen leaves, experimenting with glazes, and creating this book. I'm so excited to share it with you!
