This book is a tribute to the countless generations of Crites family members—mothers, fathers, sons, and daughters—whose unwavering efforts laid the groundwork for our family and contributed significantly to the American tapestry. I embarked upon this journey with an open mind, uncertain of the virtues and flaws I might unearth within our lineage. My unwavering commitment was to chronicle the factual record, unburdened by prejudice, so that my children might learn from their ancestors' commendable accomplishments and regrettable actions. I have been profoundly moved by the recurring examples of courage, integrity, perseverance, and devotion to faith and family that emerged during my research. My anticipation of uncovering regrettable actions was unfounded. With its creative interpretation of historical facts to provide a first-person narrative, I sincerely hope this work will illuminate the lives and legacies of those who came before, casting a respectful light upon their contributions. I dedicate this work to all the Crites who have come before me.
