The classic collection of legends from one of Yosemite's native peoples is available once again! Read about the greed of His’-sik the Skunk, about how Ah-ha’-le the coyote created humans, and about the quarreling couple who became Half Dome and North Dome. For centuries these stories have instructed and entertained native people of Yosemite. Presented here in a form that represents, as closely as possible, the way they were traditionally told—and beautifully illustrated with the artwork of Maidu artist Harry Fonseca— these stories offer an alternative, older way of understanding a beloved American landscape as well as an aspect of the culture of people who have cared for that landscape since time immemorial.  This compact, attractive volume was originally published in 1981 and has been long unavailable except in Yosemite National Park.  Frank La Pena , Nomtipom Wintu, was a professor of art and former director of Native American Studies at California State University, Sacramento. His papers are housed in the Gerth Special Collections and University Archives. Craig D. Bates was the curator of ethnography for the National Park Service Museum in Yosemite National Park for more than thirty years. Steven P. Medley served as the president of the Yosemite Association from 1985 until his death in 2006. He was a former naturalist, research librarian, and museum curator in Yosemite National Park. Harry Fonseca , an artist of Nisenan-Maidu descent, drew upon Maidu lore and traditions for his work and was considered a leading California native artist.

How are ratings calculated?
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness.
