Spanning generations and time zones, Ruth Giffin Godley’s 55 tales take the reader on a whirlwind tour of life. From her childhood adventures in small town Lawrence, Massachusetts to her early discovery of California’s exclusive Rancho Santa Fe; from foreign travel junkets to places as familiar as Tijuana, to some of the most exclusive travel destinations in the world, Ruth shows us how to jump into new situations with both feet. Whether applying for a job for which she was unqualified, or finding flu medicine at midnight in downtown Taipei, Ruth’s question keeps coming up: Life, what have you got for me today? It turns out the answer was obvious: Plenty Ruth Giffin Godley, a 1937 graduate of Leland Powers School of Theatre in Boston, started her lifelong career in advertising and promotions at just 19 years old in a department store in Lawrence, Massachusetts. Her first assignment writing bold advertising copy for a hosiery sale almost got her fired, but turned into triumph as customers stormed the store, heading straight for the stocking counters! In 1954, Ruth and her family moved to sunny San Diego, California where she jumped right into freelance radio and television promotions. The family settled in the North County community of Rancho Santa Fe where, in 1964, she started Rancho Santa Fe Living Magazine (now Ranch and Coast Magazine). A chance invitation to cover the inaugural British Airways (then BOAC) flight from LA to London was all it took for Ruth to be bitten by the travel bug. She began to write about her adventures in every continent, but also right at home, for RSF Living as well as for her later business, Exciting Adventures in Travel. Ruth later wrote the "Chit&Chat" column for the Rancho Santa Fe Review for many years and currently serves as chaplain for the local Rotary chapter where she contributes interfaith blessings for the opening of the weekly meetings.
