Rule #1: In a world where you can be anything, be a Queen. Since coming out two years ago, Jackie has grown into a self-proclaimed “Teenage Gay Icon”. A phoenix rising from the ashes of his past, it’s just a matter of time before he takes the Drag world by storm as the Queen he’s meant to be. Every day, his light shines brighter. Meanwhile, Jackie’s sister, Virginia prefers to avoid the spotlight at all costs. Her constant struggle with anxiety and panic attacks makes just getting through the day a struggle in futility. Her small amount of peace comes from the 90’s “Dad Rock” that plays in her ever-present headphones and writing in her journals. Rule #2: Life is too short not to feel beautiful. As kids, they were best friends, staying close regardless of the tragedies that struck their family. Unfortunately, their evolution/digression (depending on who you ask) as teenagers has led to, “a failure to transition into a new relationship dynamic.” At least that’s how Virginia’s therapist describes it. Virginia claims to be over it, and Jackie seems to care less, but a new tragic twist changes everything. Rule #3: WWJackieD Jackie doesn’t have much time, and there is too much he still needs to do. His answer is a cross-country road trip to New York City for a chance at his dream audition on Drag Quest. Along the way he plans on “fixing” Virginia by teaching her his “Three Rules” and taking her back to where he believes all her issues started. Virginia doesn’t believe any of this is about fixing her for a second. She’s a glorified Uber driver on Jackie’s eternal quest for icon status. But what choice does she have? It may be the last days she ever gets to spend with him. But will these Lessons from a Teenage Gay Icon be enough to change her in any way? Can they at least help her find forgiveness for the last few years and salvage their relationship? Or are these rules just a cheap replacement for what she now knows she’s about to lose, Jackie.
