Life is one big school. We are all students in the school of life. Solomon, through his proverbs, left for our instruction a vast repertoire of wisdom lessons to help us establish the priorities of life, improve the quality of our lives and relationships, and grow in the fear of God. Often these lessons of wisdom are learned too late. They are learned only after man has made mistakes, done damages, eaten the forbidden fruit and compromised his spiritual, moral, and physical health. Life's lessons must be learned and applied before and not after life’s big decisions. Experiences and circumstances are teachers. But it’s best to learn from the experiences of others. If we are wise, we will not have to suffer where our elders suffered. If we are obedient, we will not have to endure the pains, disappointments, and judgments reserved for those who despise wisdom. Salomon has made available to us his teachings, his wisdom, his experiences, his observations, a way of life, a know-how, a savoir-vivre, a roadmap to success. In the majority of cases, success and failure are foreseeable and predictable. Nothing is left to chance and luck. In life, there are principles to follow for success. And disregarding certain principles inevitably leads to failure. Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived on earth, has left through the book of Proverbs wonderful principles to follow for success and achievement. His teaching is profound, spiritual, and practical. The main ideas of his proverbs focus on wisdom, the fear of the Lord, the search for what is good, what is true and just. The practical scope of his teaching covers human relations, social interactions, the great virtues of life, self-control, control of the tongue, discretion, moderation, temperance. He castigates laziness and exalts the discipline of hard work. He instructs the great and the small, the rich and the poor, men and women, parents and children, the king and his subjects. As great and wonderful as Solomon’s wisdom was, the Bible points us to the fullness of wisdom that is Jesus Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God for the salvation of our souls. The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with the people of this generation and condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom; and now something greater than Solomon is here. Jesus is here. Let him enter your heart.
