With a promise that they will not get into any trouble, Marion, Rollins, Octavia Hennessy, and Martha Halston, all older residents of Branfield, NH, convince their husbands that they need a ‘girl’s getaway’. They choose Compton, FL as their destination. At the same time two men, Paul Miller, a young golfer who is the USA AMATUER winner. and Sean McPherson a retired educator who has just been hired to be Compton’s new CITY MANAGER, arrive in the city to begin new lives. Quite by accident, all of these people meet and become friends. The arrival of a dangerous hurricane finds them sheltering together and becomes the catalyst for involving them in a shocking crime and a real test for the links they have formed. Reviewed by Pikasho Deka: 5 Stars - Readers Favorite Beverly A. Massey's Links follows a group of strangers who team up to survive extraordinary circumstances. Martha, Marion, and Octavia, best friends from Branfield, New Hampshire, are excited about their vacation in Florida. The three elderly ladies soon find themselves in the company of Sean McPherson, a former school administrator and new city manager of Compton, and Paul Miller, an amateur golf champion who has recently acquired a new house in the town. When a devastating hurricane hits the coast, the ladies eagerly accept Paul's invitation to spend their time in his home until the storm passes. However, misfortune strikes when Octavia unexpectedly goes missing, and Martha has a breakdown that requires immediate treatment. Where is Octavia? And who's behind this mess? Beverly A. Massey has written a captivating tale centered around some down-to-earth characters, each more compelling than the last. This story demonstrates how strangers can form bonds of friendship with each other in times of need and help each other out. This is a character-driven drama laced with humor, heart, and mystery. The book's first half plays out like a slice-of-life drama, while the second half becomes a sleuth mystery with a surprising twist. Apart from the friendship between Martha, Octavia, and Marion, I also enjoyed how Massey incorporated the characters of Paul, Sean, and Ella into the narrative and gave them their own agency. The narrative is paced perfectly, and the plot is thoroughly engaging. Readers who enjoy cozy mystery tales will love this book. Reviewed by Asher Syed: 5 Stars - Readers Favorite Links by Beverly A. Massey revolves around several characters whose stories intersect during Hurricane Judy's landfall in Florida. Marion, Octavia, and Martha are vacationing in Florida when they decide to seek shelter at a house offered by Paul Miller, a man who recently won the property in a bet. Sean McPherson, the newly appointed city manager of Compton, is tasked with preparing the city for the hurricane and coordinating emergency measures. As the storm approaches, Marion and her friends prepare for the worst, reflecting on their lives, while Paul ruminates over the legitimacy of the house he won. The group settles into Paul's house for safety where they are joined by others, including Sean, as the storm makes landfall. However, the deluge brings up more issues than it washes away, and what started as a storm turns into a mystery. In Links, Beverly A. Massey pulls together a mixed bag of individuals with humor, some head-scratching, and a lot of twists. I enjoy it when an author puts the effort into fleshing out even ancillary characters, and Massey accomplishes this with Ella, who quite fairly believes Paul's claim of winning the house is dubious. His extended invitation to a tourney is brilliant. Hurricane Judy is used as both a metaphorical and literal device that bears down on the characters, and, where each decision feels crucial, Massey churns out fear and uncertainty perfectly. The build-up is steady and I was pleasantly surprised when the arc transitions into a missing persons mystery, and readers are given the opportunity to figure out how the heck someone wins a house, and whether it is a good or a bad thing. Massey's writing is strong and atmospheric, and Links is a wonderful weekend read. Very highly recommended. Beverly A Massey was born in Manchester, New Hampshire, in 1932.
