Lorenzo Lotto (1480 - 1556) was an Italian painter, draughtsman, and illustrator at the Venice School. He painted altars, religious works, and portraits. Being active during the so-called Upper Renaissance, he represents a transition stage between the first painters of Florence and the Roman Mannerists of the 16th century.During his life, Lotto was a respected and popular painter in northern Italy. The various styles he worked during his life put him outside the Venice School, which he is commonly associated with. He had his individual and even idiosyncratic style. After his death, he was gradually forgotten, perhaps because his works remain in small churches and smaller museums. Thanks to the work of art historian Bernard Berenson, he was rediscovered and acclaimed as a master at the end of the 19th century.
