Kynra (KEN-ruh) is a unique name, an original creation by her parents. Two separate websites (2020) specializing in the frequency of names over time show no historic uses of the name. This uniqueness fits Kynra, because she was unique in some of the very best ways. One of those ways was her love. Kynra thoughtfully and increasingly worked on her capacity to love. Over her life, as her letters and journals show, she regularly made efforts to love people more—and to love more people.Part of her personality was that she wanted friends and family around her. She didn’t like feeling lonely. Even more than that though, she yearned to be of real service. She hoped to sincerely connect and uplift, and, as she states in her journal, ultimately, she was trying to follow the loving example of the Savior Jesus Christ. Thus, she naturally endeared herself to many. Her friends found in her a breath of fresh air, a smile, a wise and willing helper. She was in particular a good listener and capable visitor.Of course, her family experienced her love and goodness firsthand. We, her family, unitedly honor her. She gave great love to us, patiently struggled through life with us, and sacrificed much in our behalf. The sweet, inspiring memories of this wonderful woman were recorded in several ways. Kynra was a letter writer, and many of those letters were fortunately preserved. As a child, her family liked taking nice pictures, and many of her childhood photos and documents are likewise available. She noted that Gordon repeatedly encouraged her to keep a journal, and we have many of her entries spanning several years. Consequently, this book is largely a compilation of documents more than a commentary.Although she passed away twenty seven years ago, it seems Kynra herself is somehow the active, driving force behind this book. Before beginning, I clearly felt for more than a year the push to start a biography on my mother. When I finally began, documents seemed to come forward almost on their own.Beginning with Chapter 3, the book is almost entirely composed of letters from her and to her, newspaper clippings, documents, and journal entries. In this authentic way, the reader will come to know a very real person who is trying, sometimes failing, and often succeeding to improve herself and improve the world around her.Why would such a project be worthy of what appears to be divine help? I believe it is because there is power for good here, primarily for Kynra’s family, but also for her friends, and even for those without any association. For me, that power is largely found in her exemplary focus on love. The power of love, sacrifice, and even suffering unfolds in her writings. By the end, we witness that Kynra had indeed grown in her ability to love people more—and to love more people. In the process, she was lifting and inspiring those around her, just as she had hoped to do. And now, through her letters and journals, she continues to reach out to us, to touch us, and to love us. How are ratings calculated?
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness.
