Chapter 1 BRUCE’S NEW INVENTION     On most days Lucy Lancaster went home after school. But not today.   No. Today was a special day. An EXCITING day!   Today Lucy got onto the bus with Bruce Bickerson and Heidi Heckelbeck, her two best friends.   Bruce was an inventor. He was always creating wacky new devices. And Lucy was going over to his house to help out as his inventor’s assistant!        As the bus made its way across town, Lucy turned to Bruce and asked, “What kind of invention are you working on?”   Bruce was always so secretive about his inventions in progress. All Lucy knew was that she needed to help test something out.     “I can’t give you all the details about my invention yet, but…” Bruce puffed up his chest and declared, “I’m making the best game in the world!”   Lucy squealed with excitement. She LOVED games!   But Heidi sighed.   “I wish I could go play too,” she said. “But I have to go to my aunt Trudy’s house today.”   “Don’t worry. I’m always inventing new things,” Bruce replied. “You can be my assistant next time.”     When the bus pulled up in front of Bruce’s house, Lucy and Bruce said goodbye to Heidi and jumped off.   Bruce’s dog, Frankie, greeted them at the front door. Lucy giggled as Frankie licked her face. He was the best dog ever!   The three of them headed down to the basement. Bruce had turned it into his inventor’s lab. It was where he worked on all his latest inventions.   Lucy and Bruce walked down the basement stairs in the dark. Once they got to the bottom, Bruce told Lucy to cover her eyes.        “Okay,” Bruce said. “You can open your eyes in three, two, one!”   Lucy uncovered her eyes and gasped. Gone were the test tubes, wires, screws, and boxes. Bruce’s basement had been transformed into a game room!   There were tablets and TVs for video games. Folding tables were set up with board games and card games. Bruce even had a pool table, an air hockey table, and a claw machine!   “Wow!” Lucy shouted. “You have your own private arcade!”   She hoped they would get to play them ALL!
