"Made in Westerly" tells the stories of various industries, both big and small, that created products either fanciful or downright practical in Westerly, Rhode Island. This includes textile mills, food and beverage manufacturers, and both long-lasting and short-lived individual businesses. The book also includes reprints of some early sources, such as a chapter from the 1943 book "Town That Saved a State: Westerly" by Mary Agnes Best and Thomas Perry's 1956 paper for the Westerly Historical Society on the history of mills. The main mission of this book is to give a representative and somewhat random, sometimes familiar and sometimes forgotten, peek into several creative and practical enterprises of Westerly's past and present. Maria Bernier, author of "Westerly Library and Wilcox Park: Celebrating 125 Years" (2018), is a librarian and archivist who volunteers on the boards of the Westerly Historical Society and the Westerly Library & Wilcox Park. For 30 years, she has lived on Pleasant Street in the North End, surrounded by past and present Westerly industries. Ellen L. Madison, PhD is a co-author of "Built from Stone: The Westerly Granite Story," published by the Babcock-Smith House Museum where she is an active volunteer. Descended on both sides of her family from several founders of Westerly, she is the fourth generation to live on family land. As a retired high school teacher and B&B owner, she has served as an ambassador for Westerly for many years, but learned much more about her hometown in preparing this book.

How are ratings calculated?
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness.
