Jimmy and Eileen Newell had been married 24 years when Jimmy was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Cancer (CLL) during a routine physical exam. From the moment he called Eileen to deliver the news, she went from wife to wife/caregiver, a challenging role even with her training as a nurse. After several rounds of chemo over the course of seven years, Jimmy’s cancer was declared as in remission, and things were looking up. Life was good—until Eileen was diagnosed with breast cancer ten years later, and suddenly, everything was turned on its head. Jimmy had to step into the role of caregiver, a role that life and a career in higher education had not prepared him for. In their book Married With Cancer, Eileen and Jimmy share how they coped as a couple through their cancer diagnoses and treatments, as patient and as caregiver. It hasn’t been an easy journey, but they’ve had boundless love and laughter, some tears, and a few life lessons, which they share in this book to give hope and encouragement to their readers as they make their own journey toward survival. Eileen and Jimmy Newell were both born in The Bronx to Irish immigrant parents, and met when Eileen was a senior in high school and Jimmy was a senior in college. It was love at first sight, and they married five years later in 1976. Jimmy studied History and eventually Law at Saint John's University, and Eileen fulfilled her dream of becoming a nurse by studying at Saint Vincent's School of Nursing in Greenwich Village. Jimmy's career was primarily in education, first as a teacher and then as a Director of Financial Aid at a number of New York area schools including Columbia University, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, and Downstate Medical Center. When Jimmy isn't playing with his Lionel trains or watching the New York Yankees, he enjoys writing. He started his blog, The Newell Post, in 2013, and published his first book, A Bronx Boy's Tale, the same year. Eileen has been a nurse for forty-three years, a very fulfilling career, and she enjoys cooking, shopping, reading, and writing. She and Jimmy now relish the Florida lifestyle, days at the beach, Yankees Spring Training in Orlando, and visits from friends, family, and their two grand-dogs, Rudy and Scout. Janet Angelo has been a book editor since 2005, and is the founder and publisher of INDIEGO PUBLISHING, a hybrid-indie publishing company she formed in 2011 to help independent authors achieve their publishing goals and dreams. How are ratings calculated?
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness.
