A collection of real-life stories about a madcap family living on the Hawaiian island of Maui. In her nonfiction debut, Moon relates a series of favorite family stories from her years living on Maui. These pages are full of obviously treasured anecdotes about her own family (including her husband and their two children), spanning many years and many locations around the island. The author often slips into tour-guide mode to describe places like Pukalani, which is outside the heavy tourism areas and "gives you an opportunity to experience a different side of Maui." The bulk of the stories revolve around Moon's family and their various animals, including chickens and the scene-stealing family cat, Rumba; at one point, the family spotted Rumba sitting on a chair at a table ringed by chickens, also politely seated in chairs (one of Moon's children compared the sight to King Arthur's Round Table). "I am not sure what they were discussing, but they were not making the usual loud noises; they seemed to be just hanging out and enjoying the sun," the author recalls. "They were the most laid-back and coolest chickens and cat I have ever seen." Moon relates all of these stories with a warmth and humor that will remind older readers of writers like Erma Bombeck; she times every anecdote perfectly, such as one in which the couple's older daughter "caught" Moon's husband showering with her 2-month-old sister. "I knew it!" the "little angry tomato" blurted, "You have a different girl here!" One of the strongest impressions to emerge from these comic vignettes (which include simple, funny, color illustrations) is a feeling of peaceful contentment, a subtle appreciation of Maui's many natural wonders as experienced with loved ones. "We swam, took a nap, read a book, ate fruits and snacks, talked about things, walked on the beach, and made stuff with sand," reads one such description of "a pretty full day." A funny and heartwarming family album celebrating life on Maui. KIRKUS REVIEWS
