Meet George The Wonderful is the first book in a series about a young boy with autism spectrum disorder named George Alexander Browning. He calls himself “George The Great,” after Alexander The Great, after seeing a program on National Geographic about the famed leader Alexander the Great. However, his mother calls him "George The Wonderful" because of his many and varying talents, which set him apart. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), one in every 68 children has a form of ASD. In book one, George is 4.5 years old; he’s loveable, energetic, and inexplicably gifted in music, science, and the arts. He loves to cook with his mother, paint, play the piano, watch National Geographic on television, and he loves his Transformer toys. This series introduces to some and presents to others the lived experiences of families dealing with autistic loved ones in a lighthearted and humorous manner. The series shows a lighter and somewhat enjoyable lifestyle of a person living with ASD while shedding light on strategies and techniques to calm the awkward behaviors and "tics" associated with the condition. Tics are repetitive behaviors and involuntary sounds or actions that are frequently associated with autism. They can be motor-based or vocal in nature. It is believed that tics can be managed through behavioral therapy or, in certain situations, medication. George interacts with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Browning, his sister, Sarah, his brother Henry, and their independent-thinking but loyal West Highland White Terrier, whom George lovingly named Cupcake.
