When I was thirteen, I flew thousands of miles to visit my grandmother in the U.S. She had a big piano in her house which served only as a piece of furniture. I asked my grandmother why she didn't play the piano and she replied that she has no one to teach her how to read notes. I was confused for a moment. I tried to imagine what it was like a thousand years ago before they came up with the idea that you need to learn notes. Would someone then not have taken advantage of the wonderful natural experience of creating music because they did not know how to read? Sounds are not a foreign language that you have to master in some course before you can approach them. Sounds are our native language that we all know well from the time we are in our mother's womb! There are so many ways to develop our musical abilities, through our lips, fingers and ears. Written notes play a role only at a later stage after we have built the first stage of encountering sounds and allowing ourselves to travel with those sounds on our instruments. In May 2020 my dear grandmother is celebrating her 90th birthday and Melody Trails is celebrating its birth as well. Melody Trails is my gift to her, my wonderful grandmother who bought me my first piano after that initial visit. It is a gift to anyone who just wants to learn how to play music in a natural intuitive way, freely and with confidence. Melody Trails invites you to turn the process of learning music into a rich and enjoyable experience, now and in the long term. As you sit down to play music, imagine that you are at the wheel of a car. Sometimes you want to proceed and get to your destination on time. Other times, however, you want to drive leisurely, enjoy the beautiful scenery, the trip itself and all the sights along the way. Likewise, when you play music with Melody Trails , there are two roads you can choose throughout the journey depending on what's better for you at that moment. You can switch from one road to the other at any time. There is the more scenic road where you drive along at your own pace. That path will develop your natural listening ability by playing your favorite songs. The other path is quicker. It will develop your rhythm and coordination by playing our fun and engaging exercises. And what about chords and notes, you may ask. They are there, on the path, and together with Melody Trails , you will learn them naturally and in the best clearest way.
