The history of the Mɛnde language in Sierra Leone and Liberia can be traced back as far as the migration period of the Mandi people from North-Central Africa during the disintegration of the Songhai Empire of the fourth and fifth centuries. Mɛnde remains a living language today. Unfortunately, strange and deplorable developments over the last five decades have negatively affected the spread of the Mɛnde language. Since the colonial expansion into South-Eastern Sierra Leone, the Mɛnde people quickly became more educated. The result was that an elitist group of educated Mɛndes frowned upon speaking the Mɛnde language in public. This elitist, educated Mɛnde group preferred to speak English or the obliterated English referred to as ‘Krio’. Accordingly, the elitist Mɛndes encouraged their children and wards to speak either English or ‘Krio’ in their homes and in public. This development adversely affected the speaking and writing of the English language such that most high school and even college students today cannot speak or write correct English without using the obliterated English, ‘Krio’. This situation has spread to the rural areas in the Mɛnde heartland. Now the Mɛnde language is gradually being suppressed in favour of the obliterated English, ‘Krio’.‘Teach Yourself the Elements of the Mɛnde Language’ (Bia’ekpé Gaa A Mɛnde Yie Ye-mbuisia) is an attempt to arrest this strange and deplorable situation. It is hoped that this book will not only revive interest in the speaking and writing of the Mɛnde language, but will also raise the standard of the Mɛnde language to an enviable degree so that every Mɛnde man and woman can be proud of it.‘Teach Yourself the Elements of the Mɛnde Language’ (Bia’ekpé Gaa A Mɛnde Yie Ye-mbuisia) has been developed based on the pattern of texts in other old languages, such as Hebrew and Greek. Accordingly, the student will discover that this book is a good resource for improving on the learning of basic English. The book is written predominantly in the ‘Sewama Mɛnde’ dialect with a few harmonizations into the ‘Kɔɔ Mɛnde’ dialect. Harmonization into the ‘Kpaahn Mɛnde’ and ‘Wanjama Mɛnde’ dialects was not done; instead, it was left for the teacher to do. However, the Mɛnde in this book is good enough to allow beginners to develop their mastery of the Mɛnde language.

How are ratings calculated?
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness.
