This is a reproduction of Mercators Map of the North Pole - Septentrionalium Terrarum. Mercator explained the source for his cartography in a 1577 letter to John Dee, an English mathematician and astrologer:In the midst of the four countries is a Whirl-pool . . . into which there empty these four indrawing Seas which divide the North. And the water rushes round and descends into the earth just as if one were pouring it through a filter funnel. It is four degrees wide on every side of the Pole, that is to say eight degrees altogether. Except that right under the Pole there lies a bare rock in the midst of the Sea. Its circumference is almost 33 French miles, and it is all of magnetic stone. - Center: A large black mountain made of lodestone that sits at the center of the map and is the source of the Earth's magnetic field. - Islands: Four large islands that form a ring around the pole, with solid coastlines and complete maps of the Faeroe Isles, the Shetland Isles, and the mythical island of Frisland in the roundels - Open water: The mountain is surrounded by open water, with a whirlpool in the middle that's fed by four seas that divide the North - Other features: The map also shows Greenland, Iceland, and the northernmost parts of Asia, Europe, and America. California is labeled as a Spanish territory and is placed much farther north than it usually is. Asia also features the Biblical land of Gog, which is usually associated with Tartary.
