Set in the 1970’s, seventeen year old Miami’s story unspools in the solar glare of California’s Central Valley in language buoyant with wit and vision. Raised by an alcoholic single mother in the shadow of her deceased father and her fundamentalist grandmother in east Texas, Miami finds her tribe with offbeat feminist witch girlfriends. She is short-circuited and ambushed, however, by emotional rivalries, sexual insecurity, and family drama. Just as they are plotting to take over the world, the tight-knit friendship group runs aground. Halfway through the book, Miami’s mother suddenly remarries and they move across county, landing her in a household with three teenage boys. Reeling from revelations about a romantic tryst and chafing at her unfriendly welcome in the new house, Miami acts out and narrowly escapes being institutionalized by her step-father. A long overdue confrontation with her mother results in some life-altering disclosures. Miami goes through a soul-searing scrutiny which eventually leads to the resolution of her conflicts through the deepening of her character. The twists and turns of her story make a compelling read. A wise and well-crafted coming-of-age tale. -- Kirkus Reviews Sally Mansfield Abbott thoroughly engages her readers with rich descriptive language and a compelling story with two twists to the same branch. -- Leslie Simon , The Divine Comic But through all of Miami's spiritual explorations and sexual misadventures, the narrative remains engaging, full of insightful reflections, and keenly observed period details. --Barbara McHugh, Bride of the Buddha Miami in Virgo captures the cultural ferment of 1970's California. In her journey through adolescence, Miami explores traditional and non-traditional spirituality, feminism, and complicated relationships in a blended family. -- Ruhama Veltfort , The Promised Land, The Things We Do For Love, Strange Attractors I enjoyed this book very much. It's a window into growing up femal in California's Central Valley in the 70's. The protagonist negotiates neglect and abuse to carve out a sense of herself and defend boundaries that are often violated. Well-written and engaging! -- Max Dashu , Witches and Pagans, Creator/Director Suppressed Histories Archive Miami in Virgo is a darkly luminous coming-of-age drama with an extra dose of not-so-friendly rivalries, romantic let-downs, and sexual identity angst. But it has more than its share of illuminations as well--from the stark certainties of the evangelists in Miami's childhood, to the idealistic New Age hippies, to an intriguing Native American prophecy. When you're not stunned by the audacity of the book's ideas, you will be caught up in its suspenseful, fast moving plot. --Mark Lapin, Pledge of Allegiance Miami in Virgo really shows the excitement of young feminists' early exploration of Goddess worship as an alternative path. Miami is a beautifully real and developed character and you will be rooting for her all the way. I didn't want the book to end and I look forward to reading the sequel. -- Cerridwen Fallingstar , Broth from the Cauldron, Heart of the Fire
