Caplin, Senior Partner, Caplin Robert W. Spanogle, National Adjutant, The American Legion Joseph M. Galloway received his law and M.B.A. degrees from Drake University in 1978, and was a tax manager with the accounting firm of Deloitte Haskins & Sells until 1983, when he established his own law practice in Des Moines, Iowa. A Certified Public Accountant, an attorney in the Iowa and Nebraska bar associations, and a Chartered Life Underwriter, Mr. Galloway is the author of numerous articles on tax questions; the book, The Unrelated Business Income Tax (John Wiley & Sons, 1982); and co-author (with Clair J. Galloway) of Handbook of Accounting for Insurance Companies (McGraw-Hill, 1986). Alden Todd, a journalist and freelance writer since 1946, was an editor and publications director with the accounting firm of Deloitte Haskins & Sells from 1968 to 1983, when he returned to freelance writing. He is the author of six nonfiction books: Finding Facts Fast (Morrow 1972, Ten Speed Press 1979); Favorite Subjects in Western Art (Dutton 1968); Richard Montgomery, Rebel of 1775 (McKay 1967); A Spark Lighted in Portland (McGraw-Hill 1966); Justice on Trial: The Case of Louis D. Brandeis (McGraw-Hill 1964); Abandoned: The Story of the Greely Arctic Expedition (McGraw-Hill 1961). Both authors have served several times as treasurers of associations, and have seen how many mistakes are made by well-meaning amateurs who become treasurers of organizations. They know how badly a practical guide of this type is needed. Mr. Galloway brings to this project the knowledge and experience of the practitioner trained in accounting, law and the world of business. Mr. Todd, four times treasurer of the American Society of Journalists and Authors, has learned at close hand how many otherwise capable people are like babes in the woods when a treasurership is thrust upon them.
