When Hurricane Katrina made landfall on the morning of August 29th, 2005 she left a swath of Federally declared disaster areas comprising over 90,000 square miles and completely obliterated the Gulf Coast from the mouth of the Mississippi River to Mobile, Alabama. With over 1.5 million made homeless overnight, not since the American Civil War had so many people been internally displaced in such a short period of time. Following levee failures in the city of New Orleans, one of the largest urban search and rescue operations in the history of the United States was launched.Here, in words and pictures, is the story of the men and women who pushed out into a devastated landscape and brought tens of thousands to safety.
