Winston Churchill, one of the greatest leaders of the free world, invites us into his life during the war years, while he talks to his cat, Admiral Nelson. The cat tells the audience about his life with the Prime Minister and his opinion of humans and their love for war. Excerpts of Churchill's most famous speeches, observations and memorable phrases are cleverly woven into the fabric of this play. Recently I read a snippet about Sir Winston Churchill's pets (two pugs and one cat) being allowed to roam freely about the halls and offices at #10 Downing Street. Nelson, his cat was quite a character, into everyone's business.  This one act play was born from that trivia. CHECK OUT ALL TWENTY 10 MINUTE PLAYS BY THIS AUTHOR. Written for the classroom, they address real time issues for teens in today's world. A part of the "ShortN'Small" series of short plays for the classroom and small stage. Ideal for middle and high school. Don't miss this author's acclaimed novels. "Women Outside the Walls" and most recently published "Wild Violets". Women Outside the Walls: Alma, Kitty and Hattie have one thing in common. The men they love are in prison. Wives visit their men behind bars every day and wonder how their lives brought them to this place. This story focuses on three of these women. Alma is an exotic dancer who seems, at first glance, to be a bit of a nit-wit. But on closer inspection she has a street-smart wisdom and humor. Hattie is a hard working African American with four children who is trying to keep her family together. Then there is Kitty, a wealthy socialite, who in spite of the shame and embarrassment of visiting a prison where her husband refuses to see her, doggedly visits every week. In a series of flash backs we explore the lives of these women when they lived normal lives with their husbands and children. The plot explodes when Chelsea, Alma and Charlie's daughter, disappears. One visiting day something happens that will change each of their lives forever as the visiting room erupts in violence and heartbreak. Wild Violets : It's the roaring twenties in San Francisco, a decade famous for hot jazz and bath tub gin. Violet has grown into a beautiful woman with children of her own. She has left her small home town in the Pacific Northwest to pursue a successful basketball career. With her earnings, she purchased a bar and grill. She is a 'flapper' in every sense of the word; working all day and dancing all night. While her teenage daughter raises her seven year old son, Violet is out on the town with her latest man de'jour. Dressed in her signature red dress, she is the toast of the town and owner of a speakeasy where she hosts the cream of San Francisco's society, city politicians, bishops, and Hollywood celebrities. But there is an underbelly of corruption, grifters, the mob, excess, and neglect in Violet's life. Her two children are an afterthought and she chooses her men over their well being time and time again. Their childhood needs are always trumped by her self-indulgent desires. The two children are possessions that she can put down or pick up again on a whim, showing them off to her current beau or friends and then forgotten. And when they get in her way, she gets rid of them. Coming soon! "Song of the Yukon" Fall, 2013 'Sugarek's third novel is a commanding, historic saga. Song of the Yukon begins with this dream and works outward as it follows LaVerne's efforts to hone and realize her desires upon discovering that the Alaskan frontier offers her a unique opportunity to "...chase your dreams there, be whoever you want to be...no one telling you what to do and what not to do..." From boat rides on the Yukon river and encounters with native tribes to filing homestead papers and working the land, LaVerne uses newfound frontier wisdom as a basis for expanding both her music and her perceptions. It is here she encounters her first real friend and learns the realities of frontier life and homesteading: experiences that will shape her life, help her create music, and lead her in directions no woman has explored before.
