Go to India and a guru will tell you to go to Mt. Shasta. Local mystics will tell you fascinating stories about golden temples deep inside this mysterious mountain. Discover tales about a supernatural race called Lemurians who escaped to Mt. Shasta after their continent sank into the Pacific Ocean. Or, about survivors of Atlantis who live in a city of splendor deep within the mountain, or about another race of supernatural dwarfs who dwell in her caves. As for me, I moved to Mt. Shasta’s slopes many moons ago because I fell under her spell while passing through the area. I was a native of Illinois, that flat midwestern prairie land. Before me, that golden October day, rose majestically the most spectacular sight. A lone, snow-covered, glistening mountain rising 14,162 feet into an azure sky with a curious lenticular cloud hovering over her peak. She is California’s mystic mountain, and I feel privileged that it was my destiny to write the following collection of wonderful—often astonishing—legends, strange interviews, and incredible tales about this historic sentinel of northern California.
