Allah (the Exalted) honoured this Ummah with the eternal miracle – the glorious Quran. It is the greatest guidance for mankind, the Final Revelation and the only complete Divine Guidance available to mankind. To understand the Quran, we are in need of a brief explanation of ‘Uloom al-Quran’, so as to know what accompanies this majestic Book. According to the scholars, Uloom al-Quran is a science that discusses topics related to the Quran such as: how it was revealed and gathered; the first and last portion of revelation; Makki and Madani chapters; the 7 modes of recitation; its Miraculous Nature (I‘jaaz); clear (Muhkam) and ambiguous (Mutashaabih) verses; abrogating (Naasikh) and abrogated (Mansookh) verses; knowing the causes of revelation (Asbaab an-Nuzool); Tafseer etc.’ By knowing these topics, we gain a greater understanding and appreciation of the Quran. Many scholars wrote great books on this science, which they compiled with the utmost care and a great deal of effort and research. They spent their lives preserving this great treasure and departed this world leaving behind an enormous wealth of knowledge. Unfortunately, most western Muslims have lost touch with these books, and also are unaware of their vast scholarly tradition. They are so distant that even when they are exposed to a portion of it, they find it overwhelming. Therefore I saw the pressing need for a very basic introductory course to this great science. My hope is that after completing this course, the students would have a greater appreciation and love for the Quran, and use this as a springboard for further Islamic studies.
