Agnes May, 15-year-old runaway from Arkansas, is out on the road in 1964. One of her rides is a vacationing couple from Niles, Michigan, who take her home, eventually adopting her. She finishes growing into a woman, and goes to work in the family business, her dad’s fabrication and machine shop, where aptitude for things mechanical emerges and develops. Moving to a nearby larger company, she quickly rises—a woman in a man’s world.
