Part memoir, part ethnohistorical chronicle, My People the Sioux is one of the first published accounts of Native American life written by a Native American. Luther Standing Bear was seemingly everywhere in the course of his extraordinary life. He met Chief Crazy Horse on the eve of the Battle of the Little Bighorn, was enrolled in the first class at the government-run Carlisle Indian Industrial School, witnessed the Ghost Dance movement, toured the US and Europe with showman Buffalo Bill, and devoted his later years to Indian rights. His firsthand accounts of those experiences―and his reflections on Sioux culture, customs, and traditions―combine to make this narrative a landmark of Native American literature. Revised edition: Previously published as My People the Sioux , this edition of My People the Sioux (AmazonClassics Edition) includes editorial revisions. Luther Standing Bear (1868–1939) was born in what is now South Dakota, raised in the oral traditions of the Lakota tribes, and attended the Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Pennsylvania. Over the next thirty years, Standing Bear took on a number of different roles: principal of a reservation day school, postal worker, rancher, merchant, assistant minister, and member of Buffalo Bill’s traveling Wild West show. In 1912 he moved to California and appeared in more than a dozen westerns. With Jim Thorpe, he cofounded the Indian Actors Association, which strove to correct the misrepresentation of Native Americans on-screen. An outspoken activist at the forefront of the Progressive Era, Standing Bear published numerous articles and books that preserved Lakota culture and deepened public awareness of Native American peoples.

How are ratings calculated?
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness.
