NASA is a dying institution. Their misguided efforts to establish long term human presence on the Moon and later human missions to Mars is a failed endeavor. NASA management has ignored the crew safety risks and humongous cost to develop and operate a crewed space transportation system for deep space transportation. They misrepresented the risk to the crews by refusing to acknowledge that the human body cannot tolerate long term exposure to radiation and the low gravitation that they will experience in the deep space environment. If NASA is to survive as the leading space faring agency, they must use robots to explore and develop the commercial resources of deep space. They must lower the cost of space transportation by creating a commercial transportation system of reusable launchers and space-based tugs. If we are to survive, NASA must develop and operate an asteroid/comet defense system. If we fail to meet this challenge, our fate could be the same as the dinosaurs.
