The title page shows the complete title as: Narrative of a Journey across the Rocky Mountains, to the Columbia River, and a Visit to the Sandwich Islands, Chili, &c., with a Scientific Appendix. Townsend was a brilliant young ornithologist invited to join Captain Nathaniel Wyeth's 1834 expedition to the Oregon country. This account (restored here to its entirety) includes engaging descriptions of his travels as well as his original scientific appendix of bird and mammal life. The narrative was originally published in 1839 (H. Perkins, Philadelphia); here it is introduced and annotated by George A.
