A beautiful must-have physical world map for any lover of the sea!

Sea-farers sailed the Aegean 10,000 years ago, while Australia's first populations arrived at its shore millennia before that. Phoenecians may have circumnavigated Africa as early as 600 BCE, as voyagers in big canoes left southeast Asia to sail the pacific. Vikings found north America 1,000 years ago, using ocean winds and currents to find their way across the sea. We have always had a love affair with the sea.

In 1950, an article by Rachel Carson entitled "The Sea Around Us" told of what science knew of the sea. National Geographic maps have since then filled in the blanks, and just over 30 years of ocean exploration yielded this World Ocean Map. Capturing Earth's lands and oceans, this stunning map's relief shading accentuates the ocean floor, mountain ranges, river valleys, deserts, and continental shelves in amazing detail and beauty. Published in December 1981 as a companion to the article, "New World of the Ocean."

The world ocean blankets 70 per cent of the earth's surface, salt-bitter, storm racked and much of it is pitch dark and near freezing. Even today, it remains immense, mysterious and powerful. This map represents the astounding technological innovations of the 20th century that allowed us to map what lies beneath the waves, using satellites and robots to guide the way.

Printed on high quality canvas, that brings out the artistic quality of this map. 5 inches of additional material is included on each side so that you have enough material to have the map stretched on a frame while preserving the integrity of the product

Your map is rolled and packaged in a sturdy tube to protect it during shipment.
