Natural Theology: A Reassessment offers corrections to widespread misinterpretations of the authoritative sources of Christian theology and shows that these sources affirm a traditional view of natural theology that refers to what can be rationally believed about God without using religious doctrines as premises. Contrary to popular misconceptions, Hume and Kant did not successfully rebut the arguments of natural theology, which are still being defended today. This book develops a more rigorous deductively valid formulation of the Cosmological, Teleological, and Moral Arguments for the existence of God and shows how the truth of their premises can be defended, thus demonstrating the soundness of these arguments which show that God exists. Using a unique approach which engages with philosophical theology of both analytic and continental traditions, it offers new arguments to address long-standing problems in epistemology of theology concerning foundationalism, epistemic circularity, divine transcendence, the culturally variant notion of human reason, the lack of consensus among experts, and the accusation of anthropomorphism and ontotheology and provides a thorough response to theological objections, the god-of-the-gaps objection, and the objection that arguments are open to revisions. The author develops an interdisciplinary approach involving theology, philosophy, and science to move the discussion ahead in a new and significant way. "This is the best single-authored, one volume work available defining and defending natural theology against a host of philosophical and theological objections. Loke's work is clear, systematic, fair-minded, and compelling." - Charles Taliaferro , Emeritus Overby Distinguished Professor, St. Olaf College, USA “With this work, Andrew Loke stands out as a leading contemporary defender of natural theology. He presents a remarkably comprehensive yet accessible case, engaging multiple disciplines while thoughtfully addressing biblical concerns and contemporary philosophical and theological objections with impressive depth and clarity.” - Martin Jakobsen, Ansgar University College, Norway “This book provides a welcome assessment of historical and contemporary efforts in natural theology. But it’s not just a well-wrought survey: the author also makes a thoughtful positive case for the ongoing viability of the project.” - Andrew Chignell, Laurance S. Rockefeller Professor in Religion, Philosophy, and the University Center for Human Values, Princeton University, USA “In this accessible volume, Andrew Loke offers us a comprehensive account of the arguments of natural theology set in their historical contexts. Assessing the validity and limitations of these approaches, he provides a nuanced defense against internal and external critics of its vital role for Christian theology. His study should prove immensely valuable to a wide readership.” - David Fergusson , Regius Professor of Divinity, University of Cambridge, UK Andrew Ter Ern Loke is an associate professor in the Department of Religion and Philosophy and Research Fellow in the Centre for Sino Christian Studies at Hong Kong Baptist University, and an elected Fellow of the International Society for Science and Religion.
