"Nature as Therapy" suggests that the outdoors may be the most effective classroom, especially for children who have experienced trauma or who are struggling with attention deficit disorder or other barriers to learning. The educational and therapeutic environments are most commonly contained within a brick and mortar structure. The tools most often utilized in these environments are man-made, have a specific purpose and guide the child in a specific direction. There is little room for creativity, imagination and flexibility. Children are required to “produce” and “achieve”. In these typical environments, they can become anxious and develop more mental and physical health problems than ever before. What happens if we alter this scene? What if you are asked to take a walk through the woods, contemplate the project and then complete the rest of the task using materials from nature? Is it possible that it would be easier for you to access your emotional memories when the scientifically proven relaxation properties of nature take effect? Would it be simpler to focus on the task at hand without the overwhelming stimuli that we are bombarded with every day while indoors? Would the natural materials available inspire your creativity?"Nature as Therapy" explores these questions and more. Join us on a journey to reconnect our children with nature, helping them achieve their highest potential physically, academically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.
