As that adage goes, grave misfortune will occur at sea. But does that mean you will not live to tell about it? Suppose you are pummeled by a ferocious, electrical storm in the Atlantic and punished by thunderous waves in Mona Passage in the Caribbean. What if you have to bail hundreds of gallons of water to stay afloat? What if you are seconds away from being run over by a fishing trawler on the approach to St. Croix? What would it mean if a crew member capsized a rudderless sailing dinghy a mile off the coast in an off-shore, twenty-mile-an-hour wind? But then again, what if you also have laugh-a-minute, uplifting experiences like a brush with pirates, smuggling gold, jail in the Bahamas, and voodoo in the Dominican Republic? Would you then think you were cursed by leaving on a Friday, or would you call that an adventure because you laughed and lived to tell about it?
