This is the story of Centro Mater- an after school program in Miami, FL, which was originally founded Mother Margarita Miranda, of the Society of the Sacred Heart, to help Cuban refugees who needed a good but low cost place for their children to go after school while they worked to get ahead in their new homeland. Although the project had humble beginnings, today Centro Mater celebrates its 40th anniversary full of local and national awards and recognitions. Now, other communities of refugees from Nicaragua, Haiti, Colombia, Argentina, Venezuela, Brazil, the Dominican Republic and many other countries benefit from the same education and guidance given to the original Cuban refugees. Teresa Fernandez Soneira is a Cuban writer and historian that has researched and published books on the history of education and the Catholic Church in Cuba.
